Overview

Shadow Fight 2 is a 2D fighting game released in 2014 by Nekki. It is a sequel to the original “Shadow Fight” on Facebook and is available on Android and iOS. The game follows the story of a young warrior who mistakenly opens the gates of shadows. He must vanquish strong demon warlords to close the gates and regain his original self. The protagonist and all enemies are portrayed as shadowy silhouettes in the game. Shadow Fight 2 offers a captivating gameplay with accurate combat, weapon variety and RPG progression.

Gameplay

The game uses a dual-stick control scheme. The left button is used for player movement and attack direction, whereas the right side contains buttons representing weapon, magic, kicks and ranged weapons. There are a variety of exquisite backgrounds, ranging from bamboo forests to temples and industrial lairs. The sound and game audio blends Eastern and Western themes with dynamic music that responds to the pace of battle. Sound effects (clashing blades, heavy punches and magic impacts) enhance immersion.

The game has modes such as Duels (limited-time mode, which offers gems and rare gear), Survival (fight until you're defeated. Higher rounds give better rewards), Eclipse mode (unlocks after finishing the main story), Challenge (introduces an additional rule every game), Tournaments (fight random eniemees to gain coins and experience) and the main boss and his bodyguards. Each chapter of the game has a different boss: Lynx, Hermit, Butcher, Wasp, Widow, Shogun and finally the Titan. After defeating each boss, new weapons and armour, enemy types and environments are available.

The player has to equip armour, a helmet and choose a weapon. Players upgrade these items to ensure a better chance of winning against opponents. The weapons include swords, daggers, tonfas, nunchaku, kusarigama, claws, etc. Defeating Lynx unlocks ranged weapons like shurikens, and defeating the Hermit unlocks magic (fireballs, teleportation, lightning, etc). Players can also enchant their items with Lifesteal, Freeze, Burn and Critical Hit Boost.

Monetization

In-app purchases include more gems, energy and premium gear. Shadow Fight 2 works on the Energy System. It limits the number of fights before the cooldown unless you pay or wait. The premium currency of the game is gems. They are used to buy special gear, speed up upgrades and unlock premium content. Despite this, the game is not pay-to-win. All content is accessible for free with enough effort and skill.

There is a paid version of the game called Shadow Fight 2: Special Edition. The perks of this version as compared to the original version include no ads or energy system, a bonus story chapter (Old Wounds), more gems and better game progression speed.

Tips and Tricks

  • Focus on timing, spacing and combos rather than button spam.
  • Use low kicks since they are fast and can interrupt enemies mid-attack.
  • Standing still blocks most attacks.
  • Jump kicks are great for countering slow weapons.
  • Evade enemy attacks by moving or rolling backwards.
  • Don’t upgrade every item you get (focus on your best gear). Reserve gems for high-tier weapons and enchantments.
  • Upgrade weapon before armour, as a better weapon is very important in Shadow Fight 2.
  • Enchant only powerful weapons or armour you'll keep for a while.
  • Each weapon has its own ability and style. For example, claws and nunchucks provide fast combo moves, spears and sticks prove to be defensive and long-range, whereas tonfas and axes are slow but inflict high damage.
  • Farm for coins in survival mode.
  • Use Eclipse mode for gems.
  • Use shurikens and throwables when the enemy is recovering or approaching you.

Experts' Corner

Bosses are the main antagonists of the game. Defeating each boss again in Eclipse mode grants you their individual weapons with powerful enchantments. Useful techniques to defeat bosses are:

  • Lynx: Avoid his claws, since they’re fast and can combo quickly. When he becomes invisible, move constantly so he doesn’t inflict much damage. Use fast and mid-range weapons like sabres or tonfas and try to perform quick attacking combos, which makes it difficult for him to disappear.
  • Hermit: Avoid staying still, since it makes you prone to the Monk’s magic attacks. Against him, jump kicks and low attacks are effective.
  • Butcher: He’s slow but hits extremely hard. His weapon has the bleed enchantment. Avoid close-range brawls — attack and then retreat. Use ranged weapons and magic.
  • Wasp: She’s extremely fast and has a long-range weapon. Use low kicks to interrupt her combos and duck in time when she is about to fly and strike.
  • Widow: She can disorient you and affect your vision. Her fans have huge range, so use jump kicks and magic to avoid getting grabbed. Try to perform quick attacking combos.
  • Shogun: The military general has a strong attack and defence. Hit-and-run tactics work best. He can block and parry, so mix up your attacking moves along with magic and ranged weapons.
  • Titan: The final boss has a massive sword and abilities like teleportation, time-stop, and shockwaves. Use high-mobility weapons like tonfas or daggers. Enchant your armour with lifesteal or burn for passive damage. Focus your attacks after his big abilities.
