Hill Climb Racing is one of the most iconic physics-based games ever created. It was developed in 2012 by a Finnish developer, Fingersoft. It is a 2D side-scrolling driving game whose main objective is to drive as far as possible without flipping over, running out of fuel or damaging your vehicle. The game follows the exploits of a young driver named Newton Bill, who is on a mission to conquer the best hills on Earth (and beyond) using a series of vehicles. Whether you're chasing your next high score or just killing time with a few flips and crashes, the game delivers immense fun, with its simple design and graphics.

Gameplay

Overview Image

There are over 30 unlockable vehicles in the game, each having its own features and performance. Some vehicles are designed for specific maps. These include:

  • Jeep: The default vehicle, providing decent balance for beginners.
  • Motocross Bike: Great air control, but unstable on maps with rough terrain.
  • Monster Truck: High torque, which proves to be excellent for uneven terrain.
  • Tank: High durability and power, but slow.
  • Race Car, Hovercraft, Moonlander: These and other such vehicles introduce fun and strategic variety.

The game also includes 30 different maps (or stages), each of which offers unique and exciting challenges. Some of the maps are:

  • Countryside: The classic starter map.
  • Desert: Loose terrain and steep hills.
  • Arctic: Slippery surfaces and fuel scarcity.
  • Moon: Low gravity and fun manoeuvring.
  • Highway, Volcano, Forest, Cave, Factory: And many more for varied gameplay and challenges.

The in-game currency includes coins (which are collected during runs or earned by performing stunts such as flips and air time) and gems (which are earned in small amounts through achievements or daily rewards). The coins are used to buy vehicles and maps, and to upgrade vehicle parts. The gems are the premium currency of the game. They are used to skip wait times, buy boosters or unlock the game content faster.

Hill Climb Racing 2 vs Hill Climb Racing 1

Hill Climb Racing 2 offers multiplayer mode, along with improved graphics and daily challenges. However, on overall comparison of the two games, the first part offers a better experience due to its Single-player focus, offline play and simple graphics. Monetization

More gems and coins can be attained through in-game packs and purchases. Many vehicles and stages can also be bought. The game offers ads which can be used to receive double coin earnings after a run, reviving once after crashing and to earn free coins or gems occasionally. You can play the entire game offline, meaning monetisation is entirely opt-in. Hill Climb Racing is not a pay-to-win game. Along with upgrades, Skill matters most.

Tips and Tricks

  • Upgrade tires first.
  • Perform more air time and flips to earn coins. The Moon stage, due to its low gravity, is very efficient for this.
  • Some stages are easier with specific vehicles (Check our Experts corner).
  • Use stages like Highway or Moon to gain coins with minimum risk.
  • Watch ads for double coin bonuses.
  • Don’t get overexcited and perform many flips in one go.
  • Always aim to get fuel, even if it means slowing down.
  • The Rally Car and the Motocross Bike are the best vehicles overall.

Experts' Corner

Vehicles and Maps:
Some vehicles are better for particular levels. For best results, the vehicle should be over 50 % upgraded.

  • Countryside: Jeep or Dune Buggy (Easy terrain and good for beginners)
  • Desert: Monster Truck or Motocross Bike (Handles loose sand and sharp inclines with high torque and stability)
  • Arctic: Snowmobile or Tank (Snowmobile is best on ice, and the Tank powers through slippery hills)
  • Highway: Race Car, Dragster (Flat surface which favours fast vehicles)
  • Moon: Motocross Bike, Super Diesel 4x4 (Low gravity needs excellent air control and high torque)
  • Volcano: Tank, Moonlander, Mutant (Uneven ground and sudden lava ridges need control and durability)
  • Forest: Quad Bike, Motocross Bike (Quick on tight terrain, including trees and branches)
  • Night: Hovercraft, Super Offroad (Night mode limits visibility, memorising the terrain helps)
  • Boot Camp: Rally Car, Tank, Super Offroad (Tough terrain with obstacles like spikes and mines)
  • Mars: Moonlander, Motocross Bike (Similar to Moon, but with more uneven terrain)

Game popularity: Hill Climb Racing has proven to be more popular than most other games, despite its simple gameplay and graphics. The following factors are attributed to its popularity:

  • Simple and unique gameplay.
  • Doesn’t require an internet connection.
  • Regular updates such as new vehicles, stages, and tweaks.
  • Runs on almost any smartphone, including even older ones.
  • The physics-based ragdoll system makes even failure funny, adding to the game’s humour and charm.
  • Unlike many mobile games, Hill Climb Racing 1 does not interrupt gameplay with forced ads between levels. Ads are chosen by the player for in-game bonuses.
