Among Us is a multiplayer game developed by Innersloth and released in 2018. It is available on iOS, Android, PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox and PlayStation. The game requires elements of deduction and collaboration between players. The players are aboard a spaceship (or another thematic map), where they must either work together to survive or sabotage the game using built-in features.

Gameplay

The different game modes available on Among Us are Classic (original deduction format) and Hide and Seek (imposters try to catch the crewmates before they finish their tasks). Players can either join public/private servers or host a game by themselves. Each Among Us game supports 4 to 15 players per match and consists of two main roles:

  • Imposters (bad guys): Pretend to do tasks, sabotage key systems (e.g., reactor, lights) to cause chaos or delay tasks and win by eliminating all crewmates. If the number of imposters is more than or equal to the number of crewmates, the imposters win. Impostors can travel through vents across the map. They have a kill cooldown before they can strike again.
  • Crewmates (good guys): Complete a series of mini tasks scattered across the map (such as MedBay Scan, Card Swipe, etc). The crewmates can win by completing all tasks or voting out all imposters during Emergency Meetings.

Players can call Emergency Meetings when they see something suspicious, where players can vote someone off based on the discussion. Reporting a dead body also results in a meeting. The imposters and crewmates have special variants, which are randomly assigned to players at the game lobby before the start of the game. This can be changed in the game settings. The variants include:

  • Scientist: Can check player vitals at any time.
  • Engineer: Can use vents.
  • Guardian Angel: Protects crewmates after death.
  • Tracker: Can track other players' movements through their map.
  • Noisemaker: Alerts other players when that player is killed.
  • Shapeshifter (Impostor): Can disguise as other players.
  • Phantom (Impostor): Can become invisible.

The maps available in Among Us are The Skeld, Mira HQ, Polus, The Airship and Fungle. Each map introduces different security systems, task placements and vents for Impostors. Players can also customise their avatar with 15+ colours, hats, pets and skins, which can be earned through Stars or Beans.

Monetization

The game is free to play on mobile, but it contains in-game ads and purchases. Players can remove ads permanently via a one-time purchase. For PC and console, users must buy the game, whose price is between $5–$10 USD. Players can also buy better and fancier costumes and accessories, although they are purely visual and have no impact on gameplay. The in-game currency is the beans (earned by playing games) and stars (purchased with real money to buy premium outfits). The game is not pay-to-win.

Tips and Tricks

For Crewmates:

  • Stick close to each other, which reduces the chance of getting killed, and also gives witnesses.
  • Watch others perform visual tasks (such as MedBay scan), so they can be cleared of suspicion.
  • Check the admin and security for player movements.
  • Note the behaviour of other players. Imposters generally fake doing tasks and follow crewmates.
  • During Sabotages, solve the problem strategically with coordination.
  • Remember colour names while reporting. The person may also be a shapeshifter.

For Imposters:

  • Fake tasks properly.
  • Kill isolated crewmates and escape through vents.
  • Divide the crewmates by sabotage.
  • If there are more than 1 impostor, perform double kills with your partner for fast eliminations.
  • Avoid faking visual tasks.
  • Kill a person near another crewmate and then frame that player.
  • Sabotage lights for sneaky kills and close doors to trap victims.

Experts' Corner

Immediately before the occurrence of a sabotage, if you notice a player to be stationary and then starts moving, the player is likely to be an impostor and have caused the sabotage. As an imposter, preferably commit crimes in areas which are not under camera surveillance.

Map-related tips:

  • The Skeld: Use security cameras in MedBay, Electrical, and Storage. Most of the kills occur in Electrical. The Admin is great for spotting player movements and locations.
  • Polus: Vitals are critical. Check if someone is dead and then look for them. Open layout allows for sneaky kills and easy venting. In this map, fixing lights and sabotages takes longer.
  • MIRA HQ: Contains no cameras and has limited vision. The vents are fully connected, allowing impostors to teleport across the map, making it preferable for impostors. Use Admin for tracking movement.
  • Airship: The map is huge, so killings can go unnoticed for a long time. Ladders and moving platforms slow down chasing and escaping for crewmates. Task variety is higher, but the confusion helps impostors. The map has multiple hiding places for crewmates and is the most preferable map for Hide and Seek.
